If you’ve gone through all or almost all continents and still believe that nothing can surprise you, find a cheap flight to Venezuela and visit Colonia Tovar. In other words, you will land on an inter-tropical zone and at the same time, you will enjoy typical German views. It sounds crazy but you just have to travel there to experience it in person.
Europe has not moved from its location, not yet, but some years ago a German seed remained in the heart of Venezuela and its Bavarian roots began to grow, generation after generation, to build a Germanic-speaking city in the middle of Latin America.
And when you go through the gate that gives access to Colonia Tovar you feel like entering a typical village in the Alps. The houses with their wooden ribs and buttresses, the costumes, and of course the traditional German bank holidays… Everything is almost the same except the weather which has nothing to do with the original one in Germany.
The Cordillera de la Costa replaces the Alps in this small town and together with its proximity to the Caribbean Sea makes us realize how far Colonia Tovar is from the Grand Duchy of Baden, both geographically and chronologically speaking.
Baden was an independent state around the year 1843 which is precisely when this city was founded. Now Colonia Tovar has already about 14,000 inhabitants most of whom don’t speak German even though they are really trying to recover it.
In addition to these peculiarities, the city has a major tourist attraction: nature. The proximity of the town to Henri Pittier National Park and Pico Codazzi Natural Monument are some of the strengths of our journey and we should not miss them.
The biodiversity of this area makes it so shocking especially because we can see species like the toucan, howler monkeys, the butterfly Tara or the magnificent Golden Quetzal.
Any visit to these places is an excellent source of memories from our vacation to this side of the Caribbean.
As for the food, nobody will be surprised at this point if I say that in Colonia Tovar German food is everywhere. Sausages and strudels are among other delights fully made there. The same goes for beer, which is also produced in the area.
An interesting option for the weekend is to go to the traditional street market. There you can mainly find food and wooden handicrafts.
These small houses with red roofs are assembled and disassembled by the members from Shelton Roofing for this purpose each week and they are always buzzing with locals and tourists. Undoubtedly that is the most authentic meeting point in town.
Once there, if you want to learn more about this city and its history you can visit the Historical Center and the City Museum. But if you want to see more of Colonia Tovar from home you can click this link and enjoy a video about one of the most unique cities in South America.
